Computer Vision Syndrome

Digital Eye Strain, also known as Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), is a prevalent condition triggered by the excessive and prolonged use of digital screens, including computers, smartphones, tablets, and televisions. The continuous exposure to blue light emitted from these devices, coupled with poor lighting conditions and improper screen ergonomics, places significant stress on the visual system. A key contributing factor is the reduced blinking rate during screen time, which normally occurs 15–20 times per minute but can drop to as low as 5–7 times when focused on a screen. This diminished blinking leads to inadequate lubrication of the eyes, causing a range of uncomfortable symptoms. Additional factors such as poor posture, uncorrected vision problems, and prolonged near-work without breaks exacerbate the condition, making it a growing concern in the digital age.

Signs and Symptoms

The symptoms of Digital Eye Strain can significantly impact daily comfort and productivity. Dryness occurs as the tear film evaporates faster than it is replenished, leaving the eyes feeling gritty or irritated. A burning sensation often accompanies dryness, causing discomfort that worsens with extended screen use. Fatigue sets in as the eye muscles tire from focusing on screens for long periods, leading to a sense of heaviness or exhaustion. Eye strain and headaches are common, resulting from prolonged focusing and repetitive eye movements, often radiating to the temples or forehead. Redness and sensitivity manifest as bloodshot eyes or heightened sensitivity to light, making it difficult to tolerate bright environments. Blurred vision may occur temporarily, affecting the ability to see fine details clearly, especially after hours of screen exposure. These symptoms, while typically reversible, can become chronic without proper management.

Ayurvedic Management

Ayurveda offers a holistic approach to managing Digital Eye Strain, focusing on restoring balance to the eyes and the body through specialized therapies, lifestyle adjustments, and natural remedies. Netra Seka, or eye washing, involves gently pouring medicated herbal decoctions over the eyes to soothe irritation, reduce redness, and hydrate the ocular surface, providing immediate relief from dryness and burning. Netra Tarpana, a deeply nourishing therapy, entails creating a dough dam around the eyes and filling it with warm medicated ghee, which lubricates the eyes, strengthens the optic nerves, and alleviates fatigue and strain. Nasya, the administration of herbal oils or powders through the nasal passages, helps clear congestion in the head and enhances circulation to the s
